A paisley perspective

DAY BIRGER ET MIKKELSEN - A paisley perspective
See Lookbook
A lively mix of paisley and embroidery meets modern classics in Day Birger et Mikkelsen’s Autumn/winter 2014 collection. The collection is inspired by the paisley pattern and its journey from the East to the West. The mood of Day Birger et Mikkelsen’s new collection is a laid back love of life. Here an abundance of soft and luxurious materials, embroidery and prints come together with the paisley pattern at the centre of it all. “There has never been a Day Birger et Mikkelsen collection without paisley – whether it is on a scarf or hidden in a lining. Now we want to express the core of what Day Birger et Mikkelsen stands for – and that brought us to the history of paisley,” says Keld Mikkelsen, founder of Day Birger et Mikkelsen. The tear shaped pattern was imported from India to England in the 17th century and became increasingly popular in the 19th century as Scottish soldiers brought back paisley cashmere shawls as souvenirs. The Scottish town Paisley started producing textiles with the paisley pattern and this is how its Western name came to be. In the sixties paisley came to stand for spirituality and open-mindedness thanks to its psychedelic feel. In 1985 Prince gave the pattern a touch of rock’n’roll with his Paisley Park. In the Day Birger et Mikkelsen collection paisley can be found on soft silk shirts, skinny camisoles and knitted jackets. Here many of the paisley print’s expressions are played with - from the traditional version to an updated ink pen print. Embroidered items, brocade and animal prints supplement the many paisley pieces. ”This abundance of luxurious materials and prints is juxtaposed with a sharp simplicity, inspired by Western menswear and British heritage like classic jodhpurs,” says Keld Mikkelsen. The contrasts allow for a feeling that is at once exuberant and sophisticated bohemian.
